Restrictor Stays Needed on Awning Windows

Here is a classic case where an awning window has been installed without restrictor stays. This window is in a motel and it opens out into a public walkway.

It should have had restrictor stays for two reasons:

  • Security. Restrictor stays keep the window from opening too far, thus preventing unwanted people from climbing in thru the window.

  • Safety. This window opens onto a common walkway. The restrictor stays are required to prevent the window from opening into the public walking area. Without the stays it is too easy to open the window too far and have someone walk into it.
