epodcast178 – Editing the Roof on a Massing Model

Massing models are great way to place existing buildings around your site, to give your project a context. When you place a massing model, you can choose to have a flat roof or a hip roof.

The massing model also allows you to edit the roof to create gable roofs or even a mono pitch roof.

I believe that there challange in the way Vectorworks deals with the massing model. The first way to deal with this is to make sure that you set the preferences you want for the massing model (building height, pitched roof, roof angle, etc.) before you create the massing model.
The second way to deal with this issue is to Edit the Profile and delete the roof or extrusion. Vectorworks will then re-create the roof using the new settings from the Object Info palette.

      1. When you right-click (control-click with a one-button mouse) on the Massing Model, choose Edit Profile.
The object in the profile should be the roof. In the movie i do this at 0:41.

  1. I am having the same issue as the other two users here. plus I have an added “twist”… Following the steps exactly on an existing Massing Model, when I click “Use Custom Roof from Profile” the generic pitched roof turns into a flat roof and floats above the massing model. I correct this by right-clicking on the Massing Model, choosing “Edit Profile” and lowering the Bottom Z. However, I’m stumped as to what happened to the original flat roof, as choosing “Edit Profile” as you did does not allow me to enter the Edit Roof Settings. IN fact, every pitched roof Massing Model in my site model turns into a flat roof when I switch on “Use Custom Roof from Profile”.

    1. It seems this have something to do with the original Height entered for the Massing Model. The standard roof that gets created is tied to that height. so if you adjust the Height of the Massing Model after creating it (for example, if you were eyeballing it and realize that your Massing Model should be 14′ instead of 12′ high), then opt to “Use Custom Roof from Profile” that custom roof gets drawn linked to the Original (12′) height. This can easily be adjusted by choosing “Edit Profile” and viewing the roof from the Front (or any other flat side), selecting the entire roof and moving it up to the correct height.
My guess is that when I “Use Custom Roof from Profile” I am also (in addition to a roof at the wrong height) getting a flat roof because I didn’t choose “Pitched Roof” when I initially created the Massing Model but rather after it had been created. Unfortunately I’ve not yet figured out how to switch the flat roof for a pitched one in this case.

      1. That sounds good to me… alas I’m away next week and likely without internet access. I’ve hacked my way through the massing models, but I could definitely use some clarity on it.

        1. It was good to see that you were able to attend, by loggin in with your phone. I thought i heard you say that you could use pinch to zoom in, and swipe to move the screen around. Thanks for making the effort to attend.
