Gradients are a great way of applying a graphic style to your drawings. Gradients are colors (not images) but they can change from one color to another. You can make a gradient with several colors if you want.
Gradients can be applied to an object from the Resource Browser, or from the Attributes Palette. The Attributes Palette will access all the default gradients that come with Vectorworks, so you should try those first.
