Layers and Classes – Part 2
Creating a Layer and Class Standard – When you create a lot of drawings it’s essential that your drawings are similar to each other in the way they are set up, a standard will do that for you.

As a one-week novice to VW, I am trying to get my arms around the concept of classes and layers. Layers I understand, class concepts makes some sense BUT…
If there is a default class system built into VW, why would one spend any time developing a class system? I’ve brought in a layering system used on other applications that in theory would lend itself to be a basis for a new class structure in VW. But after working with my new class system, it makes little sense to develop a structure because of VW defaults.
With other apps, my classes (layers) were totally under my control. With VW, it seems I have little control and find after just a few hours on a given file, I have numerous unaccounted classes in my document. It leads me to believe, I have little understanding of the ‘class” concept.
Where can I go to get a really understanding in classes and management? I don’t like being at the mercy of my drawing tools. Please advise.
Some objects have classes built-in, but not all, so it is a good idea to develop a class system. Vectorworks does come with a series of files that have industry standard class names (Uniclass, AIA, etc.), so you could use those. Other users work with consultants that use their own systems, so they have to work with those systems.
