Landscape Special Interest Group January (am) 2017
This session looked at the problem of creating several curving driveways and paths. The texture should follow the curve and the path. We focused on using the Hardscape tool. This gives us the shape that we needed and there is also the ability to have the hatching follow the shape of the curve. We also looked at ways to create the paving pattern where the hardscape tool would not give us the shape we needed.
Topics Covered:
- 00:20 we started out by looking at the landscape concept. We have a sketch with several overlapping curving driveways. The paving should follow different directions. We imported the sketch into Vectorworks so that we could then draw on top of it.
- 02:31 the first technique we tried was a hardscape tool, using the boundary mode. This technique allows us to create the required shape for the paths. It does not allow is to create hatching that follows the shape of the hardscape. Using the pathway configuration for the hardscape has an option for the paving to follow the curve. At first this looks like it solves the problem except that it doesn’t allow us to shape the end of the path to join an adjacent path at an angle.
- 10:48 one solution that does allow is to create the paving we need is to create the paving lines. We found that this would work if we created a hardscape first and then extracted starting edge from the hardscape. This can then be offset to create the paving lines. Then we trimmed the paving lines to the shape of the hardscape.
- 28:26 the design also required a border that went around the design. We drew the border as a separate object using the 2D Polygon tool to create an even border around the design.
- 31:10 we looked at creating a three-dimensional border around the design using walls. Where we needed the walls to join with a curved corner, we used the Fillet tool. This is been a technique for many years and it makes it quick to join to altogether with a radiused corner.
- 34:38 as well as creating a plan view of our border using walls, we also looked at how we can manipulate these wall in 3D. we used an architectural command (Fit Walls to Objects). This command will stretch walls to fit 3D geometry. All you have to do is to create your 3D geometry.
- 40:48 we looked at textures on our 3D hardscape. We used a hardscape pathway and assigned the correct hatching so that it would follow the curve of the hardscape. When we change to a 3D view this hatching is not visible. We applied textures, but they do not follow the curving shape of the pathway.
- 46:43 we finished off with a tutorial on using Fit Walls to Objects.
