This session focussed on when to make a break from the 3D model to 2D…
Architect_075 Architect Special Interest Group August 2015 (am)
In the session we looked at Section Viewports. There seems to be some confusion with dealing with Section Viewports so we went through several options and settings dealing with these. To start with, we looked at a standard Section Viewport created from a design layer, (this isn’t the only way to create a Section Viewport, you can also create Section Viewports using sheet layers if you select a viewport first).
In creating a section viewport you start by selecting the command (Create Section Viewport…) from the View menu. The first click defines the start of the section viewport and the second click defines the angle and the length of the first part. You can, if you want to, create a stepped section that has several parts, but remember that all the steps are parallel to the first line. Once you’ve defined your section line, a dialog box will open where you can enter your settings. We spent some time looking at the settings so that the users would understand how to set the extents of the viewport, how to set the graphic style and what the advanced options for. These advanced options are very powerful and need to be dealt with carefully, you’ll notice in the movie that we go through these very slowly.
We also looked at Clip Cubes. The Clip Cube is very powerful for viewing your model and filtering out an area that you don’t want to see. You can use the Clip Cube to create a section viewport and you can also use a Section Viewport to restore the design layer view using a Clip Cube.
Having created a sheet layer section viewport, we then looked at creating a design layer section viewport. It follows the same strategy as a sheet layer section viewport except that its destination is not a sheet layer but a design layer. We looked at how you could flatten that section and what the results would be, then we looked at placing a camera that would look into a section viewport. When the camera position was accurately placed we use this camera to create a viewport on a sheet layer. The result is a section view that shows a two point or three-point perspective which can be rendered.
We also looked at Clip Cubes. The clip cube is very powerful for viewing your model and filtering out an area that you don’t want. You can use the clip cube to create a section viewport and you can also use a section viewport to restore the design layer view using a clip cube.
