Extrusions in Vectorworks Prior To 2011. All versions prior Vectorworks 2011 lack the concept of Screen Plane and Layer Plane. You have to be very careful in what view you are in before you create / extrude an object.

Hence the process to create an extruded rectangle is quite different. all objects were screen plane objects. This means that the view you are in is extremely important when you create your objects.
