In this session, we worked with Record Formats, including how to create a new Record Format resource, how to create a worksheet that reports the records, and how to create a schedule from the reported records, as well as how to modify a data tag to work with our Record Format resource.
- 00:12 Working in Vectorworks, we quickly come to appreciate the physical side of objects—which we manipulate through the Object Info palette—but we tend to forget about their data side. The challenge was to attach data to our lintel objects—for example, manufacturer, material, size, and height—and to report that data to a worksheet and create a lintel schedule. The first step was to create a new Record Format resource. We added the Field Names, Types, and Default Values needed for our lintel schedule—and discussed the usefulness of using Pop-ups and default values. The upside of using a Pop-up is that the answers are uniform (no misspellings) and answer selection is faster, while the downside is that the Pop-up must include all of the possible answers (or you’ll need to re-edit the Record Format).
- 20:10 Once the records were attached to our lintels, we created a Lintel Schedule report. We watched the data update as we changed it in the report or the records, because now they were connected. Remember to recalculate after making changes.
- 25:10 After looking at how to attach and report information, we created a Data Tag to work with our Record Format resource. Taking an existing window data tag, we went into the Define Tag Field dialog box and added the new data fields from our Record Format. Remember to press the Add to Definition button before exiting the dialog box. The modified data tags in our drawing now showed both the window number and lintel size. Any changes automatically updated in the Data Tags, which were now connected to the lintel records and the Lintel Schedule report.
- 32:08 We finished the session by creating a viewport and showing how the modified tags worked there, too, because the Data Tag tool would read the information from the design layer and update it in the viewport. Using multiple view panes, we had fun changing the data in the tags or records on the design layer and watching it update in the viewport tags.
