image080In this session we looked at making a 3D model of a fountain that had two tiers and the water flowing over the edge of the top fountain into the lower fountain. This involved several 3D modelling techniques (extrude, add solid, subtract solid, extrude along a path. Push/Pull, shell solid, etc.).

Building a two-tiered pond with running water

  • Drawing a rectangle and extruding it, all done by using the Rectangle Tool (and the Floating Data Bar)
  • Drawing a second rectangle and extruding it
  • Using the Shell Solid Tool to hollow out the first extrusion
  • Applying the Clip Tool to change the shape of the second rectangle
  • Using the Shell Solid Tool to hollow out the second extrusion
  • Using the Push/Pull Tool to remove some walls of the second extrusion
  • Changing to Automatic Working Plane and drawing a new rectangle on one face of the first extrusion. Pressing the Alt / Option key and moving the new rectangle through to cut an opening.
  • Drawing a line for the stainless steel plate so that the water flows from one pond to the other (Polygon & Fillet Tool)
  • Extruding that line with the Push/Pull Tool
  • Turning on the ‘Draw Edges’ option for OpenGL rendering
  • Using the Shell Solid Tool to give it a thickness
  • Looking at another example how to use the Shell Solid Tool (using the Project Tool in Trim Mode to get the desired shape first)
  • Creating the ‘water level’ for the lower pond (Extract Tool & Extrude command) and doing the same for the upper pond
  • A. Creating the ‘flowing water’ from the upper to the lower pond (Extract & Shell Solid & Push/Pull Tool)
  • Starting to apply textures (water & stainless steel)
  • Changing the colour of an existing texture and its scale
  • B. Creating the ‘flowing water’ from the upper to the lower pond (Extract Tool, Polyline Tool, Reshape Tool, Extrude Tool plus the Shell Solid Tool)
