The purpose behind these special interest group meetings is to cover a range of topics…
BIM_SIG_053 Architect Special Interest Group September 2014 (am)
In this session we looked at the new story settings in Vectorworks 2015 and the way that they work with walls. Looking at the detailed construction of the project will show that the walls have to be constructed differently for different detailed situations. Using Vectorworks 2015, you can set up levels as part of your stories to control the wall components, allowing you to use the same wall style with different construction requirements. Topics Covered:
- looking at different construction details and how to show a different wall construction
- stories are no longer a collection of design layers, there are a collection of settings
- with the new levels settings, you can use the same wall style with different construction types
- starting with a blank document, from a template
- looking at the standard Vectorworks levels, showing how to see if a level has an associated design layer
- creating a new levels based on the construction details. Create all the levels you’ll need, before you select the levels you need for your story
- use level names that are clear and concise
- you can only use one level name per story, so it’s better to be specific about your level names
- some levels can be removed from the Edit Story dialogue box, but default levels cannot be removed
- after the levels are set up, choose the levels that you want for each story
- creating walls with components that are linked to the levels
- how the wall components are connected to the levels
- once the wall components are connected to the levels, you can edit the level settings to change the wall construction heights. This would allow you to change a wall style with a skirting to a wall style with a negative detail
- looking at a foundation wall construction, how to edit the levels to change the elevations of footings and foundation walls
- when you copy a wall style that uses levels into a file that does not have the levels, the wall will not have the required height and you will have to recreate the levels that you need
- the answer is to start your project from a template that includes the levels that you want to use
- updates to the wall drawing techniques, using the K key to close the plan, looking at the logic of this new closing technique
- using the new square wall drawing technique
- trim tool working on walls
- curtain walls are a wall style
- inserting a door in a curtain wall
- the new Edit Curtain Wall tool
- if you migrate your workspace from Vectorworks 2014 to 2015, Vectorworks will not add the new tools. The best technique is to start with Vectorworks 2015 standard workspaces and then edit those to suit your drawing style
- frame and panel settings on the curtain wall dialogue box
