epodcast 188 – Installing Large Library Content with Vectorworks 2014

With Vectorworks 2014 that has been a change to the way that large content libraries are installed. There are now so many libraries to be installed that they no longer fit on the DVD, but they are all available after you have installed Vectorworks from the Vectorworks website.

At the end of the installation process you will be prompted to visit the website and install the library files. You get a choice over which files you want to install. When you drag the files into Vectorworks, Vectorworks moves the files to the correct location.

  1. Jonathan, you in a previous tutorial suggested to drag items from the Applications>Vectorworks into our own VWs Userfolder. What files exactly can you drag? Library items? I installed my 3rd party plugins in the user folder and they wouldn’t work; had to put them in the App>Wk>Plugins. Same happened with my custom workspace. Thanks.

    1. I suggest you drag the Default Content files that you need. For example, if you use a a lot of walls , then drag the files from the Walls~Slabs folder in the Vectorworks application folder to the Walls~Slabs folder in your user folder. You have to make sure you move the files into the correct folder otherwise it won’t work.
When you install plug-ins, you must put them into the correct folder in the the user folder, which is the Plug-ins folder. If you do not add the plug-ins to the correct folder they will not appear. Remember to quit Vectorworks before installing plug-ins.

      1. The reason I wrote this message is that a few weeks ago, after installing VWs 2014, I started moving things from the App folder to the user folder ( the Renderworks folder, for example) and then VWs would not work properly. Some items seems are not meant to be moved. So, items in the Libraries or Plug-Ins folder can be moved, then.
And what about the Application Support folder which seems to duplicate the User folder in many ways. Should I leave that alone?
        Thanks.

  2. And where exactly should Textures go? There are several folders.
And can you place aliases in the favorites folder instead of the actual files or folders?
Thanks, as always for the great help.

    1. Put textures into the Renderworks-Textures folder. Some tools will allow you to use an alias or a shortcut in the user folder, but some will not. And it is trial and error to find our which ones work. I don’t bother any more, I just put the files into my user folder.
