Interactive Workshops April 2013 – Detailing

These sessions looked at how to create details. Drawing your details is a major part of the Contract Documents, so we are looking at what strategies you can use to improve.

Not everybody draws complex detailing for every project. But it is common to create details that show how the building goes together for architectural and landscape projects. You might be thinking that with all the talk of BIM,  Vectorworks will do all the detailing for you. This is wrong. Vectorworks can create sections, and take details from the sections using Detail Viewports, but details have a special purpose. The purpose is to explain how the building components join together to create the building. Since we can’t rely upon a 3-D model to create all the details, we need to look at ways we can use to speed this up.
In the session there was some users who do use 2-D drawing techniques to create the details. They had not tried the Detail Viewport techniques in Vectorworks. So in the session we looked at Detail Viewports, we looked at how to use symbols to create your details, we looked at using a 2-D cross-section to create the details, and we also explored the Section Viewport Advanced Properties to see if these can be used to create details from our BIM model.
