Associated Dimensions can be quite powerful, but if you don’t want to use associative dimensions there is a document preference that allows you to turn this on or off.
You can choose to use Screen Plane only, Layer Plane (Working Plane) only, or both. This is a Document Preference which means that you can have different settings for each document depending what you are trying to achieve.
