2014-09-10_20-40-28Landscape 3D modelling – How to create a curved angled garden wall that joins a straight wall and how to create a spiralled sculpture to sit in its centre.

Topics Covered:
Wall

  • using the Spiral Tool (and its various settings) to create the desired shape
  • looking at various options (Arc by 3 points; Fillet Tool) to connect the straight wall to the curved wall (with an arc shape)
  • using the Round Wall Tool to draw the curved wall (in segments) along the shape of the spiral
  • adding a short straight wall to the end of the curved wall
  • using the Fillet Tool to combine the long straight wall to the short straight wall to finish the entire wall shape
  • increasing the wall thickness
  • using the Reshape Tool (Reshape 3D Walls Mode – various options) to create and line-up the angles of the curved wall
  • using the Taper Face Tool to taper the walls (hint: the walls are thus being converted to Generic Solids)
  • It has been pointed out that the reason that we could not add all the Generic Solids as intended was because the smallest one was still a Wall (had not been tapered yet) and not a Generic Solid.
  • combining all Generic Solids with the Add Solids command (quicker to then apply a texture to the entire wall)
  • applying texture
  • demonstrating again the marvellous capability of the 2D Fillet Tool to fillet between straight walls (ending up with a serpentine wall shape)
  • the same shape (2D or 3D) can be achieved by drawing with the Double-Line Polygon Tool (Create Polygons Mode) and then using the Fillet Tool (Fillet [Circular Arc] Point Mode) to smooth the corners. Extrude and taper that shape the same way we did the wall and you end up with the same result. This is an ideal solution to creating retaining walls!
  • using the Split Tool to angle the newly created wall
  • the newly created wall (and the earlier created curved, angled and tapered wall) is a Generic Solid and hence does not display correctly (2D) in Top/Plan View. To remedy it use the Create Auto Hybrid command. The newly created Auto Hybrid also allows to alter the Cut Plane Elevation as desired.

Sculpture

  • drawing two rectangles and placing a 2D Loci in between
  • explaining and demonstrating the standard Sweep command
  • adjusting the Pitch and Sweep settings in the Object Info palette to obtain the desired look of the sculpture

General
Creating your own textures, e.g. (stone wall). Use the panorama function of your smart phone (don’t pivot around your standing position, walk along the wall instead to create the panorama shot). This is then the basis for your own texture that can be applied to any of the walls created above.
Wall (continued)

  • Here is another option to create the curved wall:
  • drawing the desired shape (Freehand Tool, Polyline Tool, etc.)
  • converting to a NURBS (curve)
  • adjusting the elevation of individual vertices along the entire NURBS
  • creating a cross section of the wall (e.g. Rectangle Tool)
  • adjusting the taper with the Reshape Tool
  • then using the Extrude Along Path command to create the wall
  • cutting off the not required portion at the bottom with the Split Tool
  • rendering with OpenGL. Adjusting the OpenGL Options and touching on the new option ‘Draw Edges’
  • cutting a hole into the existing wall(s)
