Interactive Workshops August 2014 (1408) – DXF/DWG

We often have to work with consultants and clients that do not use Vectorworks. DXF or DWG (AutoCAD) is usually the best way to do this. It will allow the you to use their information in Vectorworks, or it will allow them to import your work. I know there are other ways to work with consultants using other file formats like IFC, but DXF/DWG is still the most common.

There are also several options with importing and exporting these files, so it’s important that you understand the implications of these.

This session focused mainly on importing details from the Internet.

Session 4 (August 22nd 2014 am)
This session focused mainly on the problems of exporting native Vectorworks objects. When you create a Vectorworks object (like a complex wall style) you might find Vectorworks exports all the information and that might cause problems when it’s imported into another CAD program. In particular, if you assign lines to all your wall components, this can cause a doubling up of all the lines when that wall style is exported to DWG. There is a solution which we talk about in the movie. The session also looked at how to export a three-dimensional model of your project.

Comments

  1. Jon, is it possible to export a single sheet layer (viewports, title block, notes and all) as a DWG and have it effectively “flattened”? If so, how would this be done or what setting in the DWG Export dialog box would make this happen?
    Thanks,
    -Neil

    1. There is a way to do this, when you use the export DXF/DWG dialogue box, tick the option to Export Viewports as 2D Graphics in Model Space.

      1. I thought that was the option to check on, but I’m not getting the result I was hoping for. Nevertheless, I will try out a few more exports with this option on and will check in with you again if it’s still not working.
