epodcast189 – Creating a Barn Roof

A client asked me if it was possible to create a barn roof that had more than one slope. It’s possible, and there is more than one way to achieve it.

  1. Jon, there appears to be no video stream for podcast 189 (barn roof)
BTW, the Dutch Gambrel roof is common in the Northeast, and I have taken to doing it with a standard roof for the top section then roof planes for the lower sections. The only problem seems to be a sharp point on the top of the roof plane. It would be great if they could develop a tool for this.

  2. Totally Cool. It just happens I’m doing a remodel addition on a house with an existing barn style roof. Much easier to model the existing building now.

  3. This was a great video. I have been wondering if there is a pro/con to using an actual ‘roof’ (roof tool) or using 3D extrusions. I so much prefer being able to create my shape profile easily and then just extrude it. So far there doesn’t seem to be any limitations…correct me if I’m wrong!

    1. I think you are very wrong, that there will be a downside to your method because you will be using extrusions instead of roof faces or roofs. You will loose the ability to find the projected area, the heated area, and the ability to control graphic style in plan. This would make a good BIM special interest meeting.
